What is a psp?

As its name suggests, the PSP -- or PlayStation Portable -- is a smaller, lighter version of Sony's PlayStation. It's not as powerful as the PS2, but more powerful than the original PlayStation, and it has a built-in screen and speakers so you don't have to plug it in to anything to use it.

As with the full-size PlayStation2, which can play DVDs and audio CDs as well as PlayStation game discs, the PSP is more than just a gaming handheld. The PSP plays games in UMD (or Universal Media Disc) format, but UMD format is also used for movies and other audio-visual content, and the PSP can play those, too. And if that isn't enough, the PSP can also play audio, video, and store image content off of Memory Sticks (Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick Pro Duo are the compatible formats).

Unlike the PlayStation or PlayStation2, the PSP comes equipped with Wi-Fi, so you can connect with other players wirelessly and, if your firmware is version 2.00 or higher, get online to browse the internet. Sony has also announced an add-on camera and a GPS device for use with the PSP, expanding its capabilities even further.

What Does It All Mean?

Basically, what all these fancy features come down to is a kick-ass handheld gaming machine with amazing graphics for its size, that can also play movies and music, display photos and image files, surf the web and, with every new firmware release, even more cool stuff. Phew!

As for whether or not you should buy one . . . well, you'll have to decide that for yourself, but I've never regretted buying mine.

What can I do with a Sony PSP?

This is a great question because it really highlights one of the challenges that Sony has marketing and positioning the Playstation Portable (aka PSP). On the one hand it's a competitor to the Nintendo Gameboy Advance so it's just a device that lets you play games.

On the other hand, it's one of the most sophisticated consumer electronics gadgets on the market, allowing you to:

  • Buy DVD-quality movies that you can watch on the PSP (in the PSP "UMD" format, they're about $12-19 at Wal-Mart, Target, and similar),
  • Download your favorite music onto the PSP in MP3 format and take a few CDs on the road with you,
  • Download a photo album or three and share your family, hobbies, or just about anything else you can get into JPEG format, all on the crystal clear screen,
  • Surf the web with the PSP's built-in wireless networking capabilities and cool Web browser. Better yet, the browsers. free if you upgrade to the latest version of the firmware.

New PspGo

pspgo
The PSPgo may be more of a competitor to Apple’s iTouch than we originally thought, as rumor has it that Sony is opening up its PlayStation Store to a wider group of developers, paving the way for small games and apps to be released on the service.

Destructoid reports that software falling under this category is expected to cost within the range of $2-6 dollars, and will be given its own space on the store. Sources say a size cap of 100MB is being placed on all releases, free or paid. Fueling talk of this move is the fact that Sony announced during its E3 press conference that PSP development tools recently received a reduction in price.

Considering the core hardware is the same, we’d assume access to this content will extend to all PSP owners, regardless of model or iteration. Sony is reportedly already in talks with developers over this initiative, with official word coming this August at Gamescom. The first games and apps are expected to make an appearance in Q4.

Sony considers adding phone to PSP

The newest version of Sony's PlayStation Portable isn't even on sale yet, but the company is already looking ahead to what's next, according to Reuters.

The electronics giant is looking into making a combination gadget that would meld its PSP gaming system with the cell phones made by Sony Ericsson, its joint venture Swedish electronics maker Ericsson, according to Reuters, which cited the Nikkei business daily.

Sony reportedly plans to put together a team as early as July to begin development of the new gadget. Sony no doubt has its eye on Apple's iPhone, which is already popular with consumers and is now getting more serious attention from game developers as a platform for their games.

This isn't the first time rumors of this nature have circulated. In 2007, Sony raised eyebrows with a patent filing that appeared to show a PSP-like device with phone capabilities, and British Telecom said it was working with the company to bring voice and video chat to the PSP.

In the meantime, Sony continues to work on its portable gaming device. The PSP Go, which was unveiled at the E3 gaming conference, is smaller than its predecessors and has a slide-up screen. It will go on sale in North America on October 1 for $249.

Pachter Calls $249 PSPgo A Rip-Off

michaelpachter
No matter how you shake it, the asking price of $249 for the recently announced PSPgo is a wee bit on the high side. Outspoken analyst Michael Pachter agrees, going as far to label the device as a rip-off. Pachter surmises that despite the inclusion of built-in 16GB flash storage, doing away with an expensive UMD drive means Sony will be making a healthy profit on each unit sold.

$249 is too much. Period… The [current] $169 PSP-3000 is a profitable device – the disc assembly, for a UMD, costs more than 16 gigs of flash does. So this new device doesn’t cost them as much to make as the PSP-3000 and they jack the price up $80…

I’m sorry to say it. I don’t want to get bad fan mail from the Sony fanboys, but… They’re ripping off the consumer until they sell a couple million and if consumers don’t buy it then the price is going to come down… they’re making a lot more money on the PSP Go than the PSP-3000. And the PSP Go helps them because there’s no piracy…

Pachter brings up a fair point. Although we were extremely impressed with the PSPgo at E3, both from an aesthetic and functional standpoint, dropping down what amounts to more than half the price of a PS3 is a hard pill to swallow. Regardless, it’s hard to complain, as Sony is giving consumers a choice between the 3000 and go. Being an early adopter is never easy.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Getting A Makeover, Heading To PSP

chinatownwarspsp
In an ever so slightly surprising move, Rockstar Games today announced that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is heading to PSP this fall. Not a straight port, the PSP iteration is said to pack “an added graphical punch.” In addition to an expansion of story missions, featured are upscaled widescreen graphics, as well as enhanced lighting and animation to create an experience that will take “full advantage of the power of the PSP system.”

We’re proud to extend this truly unique handheld Grand Theft Auto experience to PSP and offer a downloadable version of Chinatown Wars for PSP®go,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “Rockstar Leeds has shown incredible talent in creating games that raise the bar in terms of depth and innovation on portables, and with Chinatown Wars we have a rich, fast-paced, and incredibly addictive entry into the series.

We say slightly surprising as Chinatown Wars did not sell as well as it could have on the DS. At 89,000 units shifted in its first month, sales were respectable but by no means stellar, especially not for a title of its caliber. Thus, it makes perfect sense for Rockstar to try its hand at a PSP version. Despite rampant piracy on the platform, coupled with a significantly smaller install base in comparison, the last two Grand Theft Auto titles sold rather well.

PSP Firmware 5.51 Released, Promises Stability Enhancements

Well lookie here, a new PSP firmware has conspicuously appeared on Network Update. As you’d expect, firmware 5.51 is a minor revision, with the supplied changelog vaguely mentioning of improvements in “system software stability” during use of certain features.

Not to sound cynical, as stability enhancements are always important, but in the end this amounts to changes we will likely never notice. That makes this firmware version bump a rather uneventful one. Here’s hoping something more substantial is on the way. It’s been far too long since the PSP received a meaty, feature-filled update.
